In a game that just screams to made into an anime, Nier: Automata is a sequel of sorts to the game Nier which happened thousands of years before the events of this game. It tells the story of three androids A2, 2B, and 95 as they try to reclaim the desolate world that has been abandoned by mankind. Developed in collaboration with PlatinumGames Inc. and Square Enix, Nier: Automata is touted as a perfect union of action and RPG gameplay as you take your squad of androids across the desolate landscape of post-invasion Earth.
The game picks up after a large scale alien invasion in which the invaders used machines to push the humans off the planet. Now safely inhabiting the moon, the humans send groups of androids down to fight the machines but only succeed in slowing their advance. To turn the tides of war they began developing a new breed of android infantry is sent into the fray: the YoRHa squad. As the war between Android and Machine rages on the game teases that a great forgotten secret will be unveiled; I’m guessing it's not that they're all in the Matrix but who knows.
I’m not 100% in love with the story for this game but what I am in love with is the gameplay. It feels very reminiscent of games like Devil May Cry or Kingdom Hearts and the fast paced combat is definitely impressive but likely tricky enough to take some practice; especially for old gamers like me suffering from carpal tunnel. If the combat looks pretty then the game itself is beautiful. The art and rendering create a duality against the desolation around you and both only serve to exemplify the game itself.
But enough of my poetic waxings; let's get down to business. In the PC Day One Edition, available now for a limited time only, fans will receive an exclusive ‘Valve Character Accessory’, as well as DLC bonus content including; Machine Mask Accessory, Grimoire Weiss Pod, Retro Grey Pod Skin, Retro Red Pod Skin, and Cardboard Pod Skin.
